Math Vocabulary

On of the greatest barriers to understanding in any field (math, science, etc), is unfamiliarity with that field's vocabulary. Here is a link to the Math is Fun vocabulary page.

Math Vocabulary

This link is to a fine, fun document on math vocabulary from our province (Manitoba).
It states that it is a document for teachers, but why should we be the only ones with an answer sheet? When you open the document, (it's a PDF), press Ctrl + F in order to search for the term you are looking for. (The document is also organized alphabetically, which is, you know, helpful).

The vocabulary below will be on the test will include: Variable, Coefficient, Constant, Expression and Equation

Expression

Expression
Numbers, symbols and operators (such as + and ×) grouped together that show the value of something.

Example: 2×3 is an expression

Equation

Equation
An equation says that two things are the same, using mathematical symbols.

An equal sign (=) is used

Example: 7+2 = 10-1

Variable:

Variable

Variable
A symbol for a number we don't know yet. It is usually a letter like x or y.

Example: in x + 2 = 6, x is the variable

 Coefficient

Coefficient
A number used to multiply a variable

Example: 6z means 6 times z, and "z" is a variable, so 6 is a coefficient

 Constant

Constant
A fixed value.

In Algebra, a constant is a number on its own, or sometimes a letter such as a, b or c to stand for a fixed number.

Example: in "x + 5 = 9", 5 and 9 are constants

If it is not a constant it is called a variable.
